Mirren's performance in this film deserves the recognition it has been given by the various awards committees. She is very believable as The Queen. After the initial sense of how much she got it right, one relaxes into the story and yes, it does feel as if one is peeping into the royal chambers and observing the human side of these larger than life characters.
While, there are moments that feel somewhat staged in order to engender this feeling of being silent observers, the film, for the most part, achieves its goals.
I have yet to see Mirren's counterpart, Forrest Whittaker, in his star turn as Idi Amin, but I can only hope his performance is as true to character as hers.
Just one quibble--awards people--great acting is not only about having the good fortune to look very like some personage in recent history. After the Oscars for Reese Witherspoon (June Carter), Jamie Farrell (Ray Charles), Nicole Kidman (Virginia Woolf), Mirren, Whittaker, and several others recently, can't we take a break from biographical performances and take a look at those actors who bring fictional characters to life so compellingly?
